There is nothing like an exhilarating gallop through the breakers with the salt air blowing back your hair. If you are lucky enough to live by the beach, you may be searching for a new seaside pastime to enjoy with your horse.
Over the last decade or so, a growing trend has been combining equestrians' love for horses and the ocean. It's called Horse Surfing and the animals seem to love it as much as the athletes!
Whether your equipment of choice is a surfboard, kite board, wake board or skim board, horse surfers can enjoy speeds up to the 40 miles per hour (40 km/h)!
There is actually a competitive industry for horse boarding, complete with multiple world championships, magazines and competitive teams.
Competition rules include a maximum length of 820 feet (250 meters) for the course, four disciplines, safety procedures, video analysis, judgment criteria, etc. The water rider is connected to the horse rider by a tow rope and can pull tricks similar to those seen in kiteboarding and wakeboarding.
No beaches in your neck of the woods? Inland riders enjoy horse boarding using official four wheeled skates through green fields. Since this can be a bit more dangerous, pro riders recommend enrolling in a safety course first!
