Horse-themed photoshoots can be great chances to get some beautiful photos of your horse, but they require a little planning. Put these seven tips to use to ensure that your equine photoshoot is a success.
Plan Out Potential Backgrounds
It’s a great idea to scout the area around your barn to plan out some good backgrounds for the photoshoot. Look for backgrounds which are attractive, but not too busy. Busy backgrounds will detract from the photo, and you want the focus to be on your horse.
Come Up with Fun Poses
Take some time to come up with fun poses that you would like to use during the photoshoot. You can check out Pinterest for some great ideas, but feel free to get creative yourself. If you have a favorite photographer, look at the shots that he or she has taken to get some ideas.
Choose an Appropriate Outfit
If you will be in the photos, then plan out your outfit for the photoshoot well ahead of time. Think about what colors will be best. If you own a black or dark bay horse, then you will want to wear a shirt of a lighter color so that it stands out against your horse. If you have questions about your outfit, check in with the photographer ahead of time for recommendations.
Clean Your Horse’s Tack
There’s nothing more distracting in a quality photo of a horse than dirty tack. Thoroughly clean any tack that your horse will be wearing in the shoot. Then, take the time to make sure that the tack fits your horse properly. Make sure to also wash your saddle pad so that it looks attractive as well.
Bathe or Groom Your Horse
Before the shoot, plan out enough time so that you can thoroughly bathe or groom your horse. You may also want to touch up your horse’s appearance by clipping long whiskers or by pulling his mane.
Don’t Forget About Safety
It can be fun to take photos of you mounted on your horse, and you may be tempted to get on your horse without a helmet for these shots. Keep safety in mind throughout the shoot, though. No photo is worth it if you get hurt during the process of the photoshoot.
Watch the Weather
As the day of your photoshoot approaches, keep an eye on the weather. If rain is in the forecast, you may wish to reschedule, and a professional photographer will likely encourage you to reschedule the shoot for another day.
