8 Reasons To Give Equine Agility A Try

Modified: Jan 18, 2016 by ihearthorses · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Have you heard about equine agility? It’s a great new sport where you and your horse navigate a course of obstacles. If you haven’t yet given equine agility a try, here are eight reasons why you should!

Equine Agility Is Available to Anyone

There’s no such thing as being too young or too old for equine agility. The sport is open to all handlers, and to horses of all ages and any breed. Equine agility can be performed mounted or unmounted, making it super accessible for all horses.

You’ll Learn a Lot About Your Horse

As you navigate obstacles with your horse, you will learn a lot about him, his personality, and how he responds to different stimuli. You will learn how much your horse trusts you, and you’ll learn just what you and your horse are capable of.

    You’ll Improve Your Horse’s Training

Equine agility is a great way to develop, refine, and improve your horse’s training. Your horse needs to be responsive and alert when doing agility, and there are plenty of training opportunities to be had.

If you work with a spooky horse, or a horse who lacks confidence, then doing some equine agility can really pay off. In agility, your horse will have to face obstacles, some of which may be scary or intimidating. As you train, though, you’ll help your horse through those obstacles, proving that the scary situation didn’t hurt him and that he survived. This can help to build your horse’s confidence, reducing his spookiness in the future.

You’ll Learn How to Better Communicate With Your Horse

Agility is all about communicating well with your horse. As you practice agility, you and your horse will learn to use small signals to communicate effectively across the entire agility course.

Don’t enjoy horse shows? No problem. Equine agility offers a different sort of competition, which takes place in a supportive environment. And if you don’t want to compete at all, you don’t have to, and can just continue to train instead.

You Can Do Equine Agility Anywhere

You don’t have to transport your horse away to a farm or course in order to do equine agility – after all, you can create your own course at your barn. Agility uses really basic obstacles made of common items which you can buy and create yourself for relatively little money.
