If you choose to blanket your horse during the winter, then you will probably have lots of blankets to deal with. These 5 blanket storage tips can help to make your life with horse blankets easier.
1. Clean Blankets Before Storing
Always make sure that your horse blankets are thoroughly cleaned before you store them away. Dirt and mud left to sit on your blankets can actually start to destroy the material. Invest the time to have your horse blankets thoroughly cleaned, and make sure that they’re completely dry before you start packing them up. Packing up a blanket which is still partially wet can lead to the blanket molding so badly that you won’t be able to use it again.
2. Use Plastic Vacuum Storage Bags
Horse blankets take up a lot of room. To make storing them easier, seal each blanket into its own plastic vacuum storage bag. These storage bags can greatly reduce the amount of room that your blanket takes up.
3. Store Blankets In Heavy-Duty Rubber Totes
When you store blankets away for the winter, you’re running the risk that mice will get to them. Horse blankets make great mouse nests, so store each blanket in a heavy-duty rubber tote with a lid which closes securely.
4. Include Dryer Sheets In Storage
Even though you’ve thoroughly cleaned your blankets, they tend to still carry a bit of an odor, especially when they’re in storage. Toss a few dryer sheets in with your blankets to keep them smelling fresh. Dryer sheets can also help to reduce the static electricity that accumulates when you pull a blanket off of your horse.
5. Label Both Blankets and Storage Totes
Before you pack all of your blankets away for the season, do yourself a favor and make sure that each individual blanket is clearly labeled with the name of the horse it belongs to. You can use the labels located inside blankets to do this, but an easier and more convenient way is to invest in a few round bridle tags or dog tags engraved with each horse’s name. Attach the dog tag to the front buckle of each blanket so that the name is located in a place that you can conveniently access without unfolding the entire blanket.

Next, label the totes that you pack the blankets away into. This will save you from having to hunt through many totes just to find one particular blanket.
