7 Tips For Buying Tack Online

Modified: Mar 25, 2016 by ihearthorses · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

When you’re searching for that perfect piece of tack for your horse, chances are that you might find it online. There are many opportunities to buy tack online, both from retailers and private sellers. Put these seven tips to use when buying tack online.

    Know What You’re Looking For

One of the major obstacles that you’ll face when shopping for tack online is that you won’t be able to touch the tack, or see it in real life, before deciding whether or not to buy it. Buying tack online is made easier if you have a sense of exactly what you’re looking for, including the item’s materials, style, and brand. This can take some of the guesswork out of deciding whether or not an item might work for you.

    Get Specific Measurements

When you’re buying an item which comes in different sizes, then make sure to always request specific measurements from the seller. In some cases, such as with saddles, it may be a good idea to ask for a picture which shows exactly how the seller is measuring the item.

Try a Comparable Saddle At Home

Buying saddles online can be tricky – you’ll have to find a saddle that fits both you and your horse. If you’re buying a saddle, it’s a good idea to try out different saddles at home. If you can decide what brand, model, and size saddle works for you and your horse, you can then go and buy that specific saddle online.

    Ask For Multiple Pictures

Always ask for multiple pictures of the exact tack item that’s being sold. Pictures can help you to identify the quality and condition of the item, and may also draw your attention to flaws which the seller did not describe in writing.

    Request the Total, Including Shipping

In some cases, the cost of shipping large, bulky objects may negate the benefits of buying the item online. Make sure that you always request the final total, including shipping, from the seller before you commit to buying the item.

    Find Out About Return Policies

Always ask about a return policy before you buy an item online. Many online retailers accept returns, but you may be responsible for the return shipping. Most private sellers do not offer returns.

    Use a Trusted Payment Method

When it comes to paying for an item, protect yourself by using a trusted payment method, such as Paypal. If a private seller will only accept a personal check, realize that you may not have any recourse if the seller never ships the item, or if the item gets lost in the mail. It’s best to use a payment method which proves that you sent payment, and which can give you legal recourse if the sale goes bad.
