On Saturday, California Chrome become an even bigger racing legend at the Dubai World Cup held at the Meydan Racecourse in the United Arabe Emirates. How? By winning the world’s richest race, California Chrome became the world’s richest horse.
Prior to the race, the five-year-old racing machine already had earnings of over $6.5 million before winning the World Cup, which had a purse of $6 million. Former record-holder Curlin had around $10 million in earnings.
California Chrome was ridden to victory by Victor Espinoza, who is a racing legend as well. Aside from riding American Pharoah to his Triple Crown win, Espinoza has won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness three times. He is the oldest jockey to ever win the Triple Crown. He donates ten percent of his winnings to the City of Hope to support pediatric cancer and he donated his entire Belmont Stakes earnings from American Pharaoh to them. http://www.cityofhope.org/homepage

Espinoza told the press after the race that the saddle was slipping farther and farther back – by the end of the race it was near his haunches – but that didn’t stop the pair.
“I didn’t want to take any chance, so I let [him] go,” he said.
