6 Ways You Can Help Horses In Need

Modified: Nov 24, 2015 by ihearthorses · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

It seems that everywhere you turn, there are horses in need of homes, food, and veterinary care. Not all horses are fortunate to have loving owners, or have suffered at the hands of cruel humans that neglected them. Here are 6 ways that you can help horses in need.

    1. Volunteer for a Rescue

One great way to help horses in need is to volunteer for a horse rescue. In volunteering for a rescue, you can lend your time and skills to the rescue’s daily operations. You might volunteer to clean stalls, groom horses, or perform office work. By volunteering for a rescue, you are helping to keep things running smoothly so that the rescue can help more horses in the future.

    2. Donate to a Rescue

If you want to help horses in need, consider donating to a rescue. Rescues are always in need of monetary donations, but you can donate more than money. Consider donating feed, first aid supplies, horse care supplies, or other items that the rescue is in need of.

    3. Host a Fundraising Event

Consider hosting a fundraising event to benefit a local horse rescue. If you’re part of a riding club, 4H group, or Pony Club, this can be a great group activity. Many rescues appreciate groups holding fundraising events on their behalf in the community – just be sure to communicate with the rescue about your plans early on to make sure that your actions will be appreciated.

    4. Report a Case of Abuse or Neglect

Sometimes horses need advocates on their side. If you see a horse who is being abused or neglected, then it’s important that you report the case to local authorities, such as your animal control officer. This is the first step to getting that horse help.

    5. Foster a Horse

Do you have room for another horse in your barn, but aren’t quite ready to assume the responsibility of full horse ownership? Then consider fostering a horse for a rescue. When you foster a horse for a rescue, you generally assume the costs of the horse’s board, feed, and daily care. The rescue typically pays for the horse’s veterinary and farrier care. By fostering a horse, you are freeing up a stall at the rescue so that they can help another horse in need.

    6. Adopt a Horse

If you’re ready to take on another horse of your own, then adopting a horse from a rescue is a great choice. By adopting a horse, you’re giving a horse in need a forever home. At the same time, you’re allowing the horse rescue to rescue another horse. Many horses are offered for adoption for low costs, making adopting a horse a smart economical choice, as well as a great way to help a horse in need.
