8 Supplies That Most Horse Rescues Need

Modified: Jan 11, 2019 by ihearthorses · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

If you want to support a horse rescue but you don’t have time to volunteer, there’s a very easy way that you can make a big difference: Donate. While it’s important to always check a rescue’s “wish list” to see what they are more in need of, here are 8 supplies that will be welcomed by almost any horse rescue.

    1. Feed

Feed bills are one of the most expensive parts of rescuing horses. Horse rescues can always use donations of feed, including grain, supplements, and hay. Make sure that you find out what types of grain the rescue feeds so that you can donate appropriately.

    2. Blankets

Many rescues need horse blankets in a wide variety of sizes. The blankets don’t have to be new, so a rescue is the perfect place to donate your horse’s old blankets. To make things easier for the rescue, try to make sure the blankets are washed before you donate them.

    3. First Aid Supplies

Equine first aid supplies are always in high demand in any rescue. Think of the basic supplies you have in your own first aid kit, and donate similar supplies such as wound ointment, gauze pads, Vetrap, saline, Betadine, etc.

    4. Wormers

Horses coming into a rescue often must be treated for worms, so donations of wormer are always appreciated. To maximize the bang for your buck, stock up when tack stores or catalogs put wormer on sale.

    5. Fly Control Supplies

Fly control supplies like fly spray and fly masks are expensive, yet they’re essential for horse care. Consider donating fly masks in various sizes and fly spray in concentrate form.

    6. Farm Equipment

From feed tubs to water troughs to fencing supplies, many horse rescues can use general supplies for use on the farm. Fencing supply donations will be most helpful if you find out what type of fencing the horse rescue uses so that you can donate appropriate supplies. You can be sure that larger donations of horse sheds and shelters will always be appreciated.

    7. Gift Cards

Donating gift cards to online horse retailers and local feed stores can make a big difference for a horse rescue. With a gift card, the rescue can purchase the specific supplies that they may be in need of at a certain time.

    8. Money

Above all other items, money is one item that can make a huge difference for a horse rescue. You can be guaranteed that rescues are always in need of monetary donations. Monetary donations can be used toward feed bills, vet bills, farrier bills, and general operating costs.
