Photographer Captures The Unique Beauty Of The Lusitano Horse Breed

Mayra Vidal might be based in Malmö, Sweden, but that doesn't stop her from exploring the world for a chance to photograph horses. She's been a lover of horses for a very long time, and combining her love for horses and photography has quickly become her life's passion.

When horses are your subject, it is hard not to capture their effortless beauty. But for Mayra, her calling in life to practice equine photography makes her feel alive. She loves to showcase the simplistic beauty of the horses, specifically the majestic Lusitano horse breed. Each year, Mayra travels to Portugal for a chance to photograph these incredible horses up close and personal.

Equine by Vidal Photography is Mayra's personal company where she showcases her work. And while she photographs a number of horses, the warmblood Lusitanos are a personal favorite for her. The Lusitano was the steed of choice by kings and warriors, and it's easy to see why when looking at them. They're simply regal!

I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her lovely work and what inspires her, and you'll find my questions and her answers below.

Where are you located?

"I’m located in Sweden, but I travel around the world discovering the beauty of horses in all shapes and sizes."

How long have you been photographing horses?

"I have been photographing horses for over 3 years now. I started long before I got my own business, but I have had my own equine photography business for around 2 years. During this journey, I have experienced a new world of photography that's always challenging me."

What inspired you to pursue a career in equine photography?

"The ones who inspired me to start my photography were actually the horses. They are majestic creatures who show the colors of what art really is about. I have been a horse groom and rider, and when I started my photography career, I started small by taking pictures of models for portfolio. Eventually, I grew and my name work gained popularity with horses people where I live."

"I've been honored to work with amazing brands, like PS of Sweden, Equito, and SD Design. I was also mentioned as the best entrepreneur in my country and for having the fastest growing business. I travel each year to Portugal to photograph the Lusitanos and the beauty of these horses has been my motivation and my inspiration for about 4 years now. Horses are such a big part of my life, and have helped to make me who I am today."

What is your favorite part about your job?

"My favorite part is getting to experience new things, challenging myself to develop, and meeting new people and their horses. I learn something new each day and each day it’s like a call for me to go out and see horses from all shapes, sizes, and colors to capture their beauty and their personality. I love to spread happiness and it makes me feel good knowing that people around the world enjoy my art."
